Are You Certified as a pm?
The United States has not had an internationally-recognized certification
program for project and program managers—until now. Thus, unless
you have achieved asapm Certified
Senior Project Manager, your answer
to the question “are you certified as a PM?” must be no.
The most widely available certification in the US tests
knowledge, but not performance. Nor does it require experience as a project
manager.
It is, however, a useful entry point for project managers. As well, some
colleges and companies have their own certification programs.
Here are several ways that our asapm Senior Certified
Project Manager program differs from other programs with which you
may be familiar.
1. We Assess Competence, not just Knowledge
Anyone can study to pass a written exam. asapm’s program assesses
more than memorization of facts and formulas. We assess your mastery
of the topics.
2. Project Manager vs. Project Management
We assess your performance as a Project or Program Manager. As well as knowing
all about Project Management, we feel it is essential to demonstrate
how
your mastery of the skills and Competences of a Project Manager resulted
in project success.
3. Higher Levels of Competence
asapm Certified
Senior Project Manager is a certification program for Senior Project Managers who
manage projects with higher levels of difficulty and complexity. It is
not
for entry-level
players.
Are You PM Enough to Pass?
To deliver competence-based certification, asapm has established PMCert,
our semi-autonomous certification body, that will administer the certification
program. Each certification will consist of the following steps:
- Certification candidate prepares an Application.
- PMCert reviews the Application to verify qualifications.
- Applicant either takes a test or produces a structured project
report to demonstrate their PM Competence.
- Applicant participates in an interview where assessors verify
the applicant competence.
- Successful applicant receives his or her Certification.
- Certificant renews this certification every four years.

The New asapm Certification Program
The asapm Certified
Senior Project Managercertification is part of an extensive certification program under development
by asapm. The program will ultimately include certifications
for a number of roles and positions that impact projects success.
Senior Project Manager to be First Available
The first available certification is IPMA-B®, asapm Certified
Senior Project Manager. It is called IPMA-B® to reflect the fact that it is based on the 2nd level of the worldwide IPMA 4-Level Competence-Based Certification program.
We selected asapm Certified
Senior Project Manager to start because improving the management of complex projects and programs is the
area of greatest need in the United States. We can make it available more
quickly than the other levels by drawing from the established programs of IPMA, of which
asapm is the USA Member.
We have also begun work on other Certifications, and their availability
will be announced on our website as they become available.
