Q: What is the PMCert PM Certification Program?
PMCert is a semi-autonomous organization that works with asapm (the American Society for the Advancement of Project Management) to bring an internationally recognized project management competence
certification program to the United States.
Our new program has four levels of certification, and we have enlisted the support of other international Project Management associations to help us develop and validate it.
Q: What are the Certifications?
The currently-planned certifications reflect a range of project manager roles and responsibilities:
* asapm Certified Projects Director, IPMA-A®
* asapm Certified Senior Project Manager, IPMA-B®
* asapm Certified Project Manager, IPMA-C®
* asapm Certified Project Associate, IPMA-D®
Q: How does this differ from other Certs?
First, we have a much cooler logo. But there are substantive differences as well.
* We assess performance, not just knowledge.
Most People can study to pass a written exam that only looks at knowledge. asapm’s program assesses more than memorization of facts and formulas—we assess your demonstrated mastery of the topics.
* We will assess Project Manager competence in addition to project management knowledge.
The top three levels all include assessment of your competence and actual performance as a Project Manager, rather than just testing your knowledge about Project Management.
Employers want to know if you can actually deliver results. Knowledge-based certifications, especially those that do not require experience as a project manager, simply cannot deliver the same degree of assurance to employers.
Q: When will the first certification be available?
The competence-based certification for Senior Project Managers of large, complex, multi-discipline projects and programs is currently targeted for the next candidate interviews for the end of Second quarter, 2007.
|
Q: What other certifications are planned?
asapm and PMCert plan to offer at least four certifications. We are also evaluating additional certifications for other key project management roles.
Q: What is PMCert’s role?
PMCert is establishing the certification procedures, validating the processes, and administering the program. Its autonomy is essential to meet US and international standards for independence of certification bodies.
Q: What is the basis of the certifications?
The certification levels are based on the National Competence Baseline, a US-adaptation of an internationally-recognized framework that reflects the Competences needed by today’s effective project manager.
Q: How much will it cost?
The fees for our first offering, asapm Certified Senior Project Manager are:
* Application Fee: $95
* Assessment Fee:
Less than $2250, and asapm members receive a
discount!
Q: I can get knowledge-based certification cheaper!
Yes, the certification fees may be less. But when you factor in the cost of your time, the training programs and other materials that are needed for the knowledge tests, you will likely find that your IPMA-B® total costs are substantially less.
In addition, you might want to consider the comparative value as well. Based on the experiences of other national competence programs, lower-level certificants generally earn less than half of what Certified Senior Project Manager certificants earn.
Q: Is it alright if my company pays the fee?
Absolutely. In fact, we are developing PMCert Sponsorship kits to help you convince your organization of the benefits of doing so.
